On Tuesday, Oct. 29, Cornelius Stubbs, age 53, of Newburgh, was convicted by a jury in Orange County Court of attempted murder for having attempted to cause the death of a Newburgh woman by commanding another man to kill her.
At the trial, prosecutors argued that in October 2011, Stubbs attempted to cause the death of the mother of one of his children while she was in her home on Washington Street in Newburgh, by having another man enter her home to kill her, Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said.
Evidence at the trial proved that a court had previously issued an Order of Protection to protect the woman from Stubbs at the time he commanded the yet unidentified accomplice to kill her. The victim was shot four times during the attack.
Stubbs was already serving a prison sentence for murder for the death of Chelsea Debidin of Walden and for shooting her boyfriend, officials said.
In 2022, Stubbs was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 25 years to life sentence to run consecutively to the life in prison for a number of crimes, including the murder of Debidin.
In the new case, Stubbs faces a further sentence of 25 years to life in state prison, which can run consecutively to the prison terms that he is already serving.
Stubbs is scheduled to be sentenced on the latest charges next year.
